britain goes coal free for a week

For the first time since the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century, Britain goes 7 days without coal-generated electricity in an attempt to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80%

Britain which was the country to power the first coal-fuelled power plant in the 1880’s is taking a bold new step in reducing air polution.

Coal plants have been estimated to emit double the amount of Carbon dioxide gas as gas-fired plants and this step is a major one to ensure that by 2025, Britain will be completely free from using coal for power generation.

Britain’s Head at the National Grid Electricity System, Julian Leslie has also confirmed that more coal free runs like this will become a regular occurence in the nearest future as renewable energy takes over.

The UK now runs on Wind energy for as much as 35% of Electricity generation, while Solar energy is providing as much as 21%. This implies that renewable energy is fast becoming a major key player in electricity production in the UK.
