The largest possible blue diamond to ever come from Botswana and arguably across the globe has just been unveiled to the public.

The 20.46 carat blue diamond was discovered at the Debswana Orapa Mine late last year and was a 41.11 before refinement. The piece has been named after one of the Country’s most popular tourist attractions – Okavango Delta and is now called the ‘Okavango blue’.

The discovery of the diamond was the country’s first recorded after its independence over 50 years ago and was secretly monitored and only a few dignitaries were privileged to know of it’s existence.

The Okavango Blue is in the very top bracket of all blue diamonds ever – predicted to become the most expensive diamond in the world unearthed. It earns its blue colour from the mineral boron present in the ocean rocks where the diamond was formed.

Blue diamonds are very rare and their discovery a cause of celebration and is termed a once-in-a-lifetime-find.
