The Bayelsa Police Command says six policemen on duty for the state bye-election for the central senatorial district are still missing after an ill-fated boat mishap in Oporoma, the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area Headquarters.

Mike Okoli, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident in an interview with reporters at the Command Headquarters in Yenagoa, the state capital, on Sunday.

He disclosed that out of the 11 policemen who boarded  the speedboat, five were rescued while six went missing.

Okoli further stated that the search for the body of the missing policemen is still ongoing.

He expressed sadness over the incident that claimed their life, describing them as brave, dedicated, and disciplined officers of the Nigeria Police Force that have paid the ultimate price while on a national assignment.

The state police boss also highlighted that the Senatorial District bye-election for Bayelsa Central and West Senatorial District were mostly peaceful, but hinted that there were little issues in the riverine areas where the elections took place.
