Two months ago in February, 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery was reportedly gunned down while he was out for a jog. A new video footage of the shooting just surfaced on the internet. In the video, it shows Ahmaud Arbery jogging down the street and then intercepted by a white pickup truck.
Aubery’s assailant and son, Gregory McMichael age 64 and Travis McMichael age 34. Travis McMichael was filmed getting out of the truck with a shotgun and attacking Ahmaud Arbery. Ahmaud fought back but was shot, unfortunately.
Greg McMichael and Travis Michael were not prosecuted over the killing of Ahmaud Arbery.
The reason the Killers have not been prosecuted is because the father, Gregory McMichael is a former investigator for the county local District Attorney. The district attorney to transfer the case to another district attorney who also had a conflict of interest for the same reason.
Now the third district of attorney is involved in the case. According to police reports Gregory McMichael and Travis McMichael claimed that they were making a “Citizen’s Arrest” and Ahmaud fought back and he was shot and killed in an act of “self-defence” but Ahmaud was unarmed.
Gregory and Travis McMichael claim that Ahmaud looked like someone who has been breaking into people’s houses in the neighbourhood and committing theft. The latest district attorney on the case wants to put Ahmaud’s case before a grand jury but that will not happen until the court reopens in June because of the COVID-19 lockdown.
Ahmaud Arbery’s parents and community are outraged by the lack of arrest. There has been a call for the dismissal of the police chief that was in charge at the point of the incident by John Perry, the president of the Brunswick NAACP (National Association for Advancement of Colored People).
