Algeria poll deadline passes with no candidates

The deadline to register for Algeria’s presidential election has passed with no candidate indicating interest.

This was revealed on national radio as the deadline for registration ended by midnight on Sunday.

Albeit several other media outlets reported that a retired military officer Benzahia Lakhdar, of Bouteflika’s National Liberation Front, had indicated interest.

The national radio reported that the absence of candidates would call for a Constitutional Council meeting to decide the way forward.

Algeria has been without a president since the ousting of President Bouteflika as a results of the protests that emerged when he declared his intentions for a fifth term.

After his exit, the protest continued as the people are asking for an overhaul of the entire cabinet members, to cleanse the system of the Bouteflika-era key figures.
