The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, SSANU, and other Unions at the Abia State University, Uturu, have threatened to shut down the institution over the non-payment of their six months salary arrears by the management.

The members of the Unions, who stated this shortly after a peaceful protest in the school premises, warned that their members will also shun the forthcoming reopening of schools by the Federal Government if their demands are not met by the management.

According to them, members are owed six months’ salary arrears, despite several labour-relations approved channels of addressing the staff welfare matters with the management.

Led by Ezichi Ojo and Victor Nkemdirim, the workers stated that the new minimum wage effective from April 2019 has not been implemented.

According to the staff, July 2019 Federal Government and ASUU agreement has not been implemented, which has resulted in arrears of 18 months from July 2009 to December 2010.

The Unions recalled that members had taken their complaints to the state House of Assembly, but nothing has been done.
