Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State has set up a Task Force to tackle illegal tree felling and charcoal production. The task force is made up of Ministry of Environment and Forestry officials, the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold, says the action follows an amendment to the Bill prohibiting the production, transportation, storage and sale of charcoal in the state.
The new law revokes previously issued permits and ensures public sensitization on the impacts of tree felling and charcoal production on the environment.
