WTO DG, Okonjo-Iweala visits Nigeria to help improve Economic Processes

The recently appointed Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has arrived in Nigeria on a 4-day visit to first express her gratitude to President Buhari for the immense support received and to help improve Nigeria’s economic outlook.

On arrival, Okonjo-Iweala disclosed that her main goal was to see how the WTO could help Nigerian entrepreneurs in improving the economy. She also disclosed that the AfCFTA could become a great enabler in boosting the economy in Africa.

In a statement, she mentioned that not only could the AfCFTA improve commerce in the region but it will also lead to the creation of more jobs for Nigeria’s teeming population. She believes that promoting e-commerce could greatly accelerate the process. Read her statement in part below:

“When you boost exports, you create more jobs. We are also going to talk about the digital economy and how young people are accessing the internet for e-commerce, those are some of the issues and more activities we can create to support that,” she said.

She will meet with the President and the Chief of Staff at the Presidential Villa on Monday to discuss and later on meet with the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment t as well as the Minister of State on the same day.

Her itinerary will also have her meet with the CBN Governor, top profile lawmakers and some female entrepreneurs.
