ATLETICO MADRID CLAIM BIG WIN OVER JUVENTUS

In the Champions League last 16 first leg tie between Atletico Madrid and Juventus, the Spanish club claimed a big victory after being denied by the video assistant referee (VAR).

Diego Simeone’s side were denied an Alvaro Morata goal and a penalty before they opened scoring courtesy goals from Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin.

Ronaldo had the best chance for the Italian giants but he had his powerful 35-yard free-kick tipped over by Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The second leg will take place on the 12th of March but Costa and Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid will be missing in action along with Juve left-back Alex Sandro after picking up their third bookings of the tournament.

Ronaldo who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the summer was meant to be the final piece in the jigsaw for Juventus, whose last European club football’s triumph was in 1995-96. Cristiano Ronaldo is the tournament’s all-time top scorer with 121 goals and has won or shared the Golden Boot for six consecutive seasons, but he has not had quite the same impact in Europe for Juventus. He has only found the back of the net once in his six European games for the club.

Juventus need Ronaldo to put in one of his greatest Champions League performances if they are going to breach one of Europe’s top defences in the second leg encounter.
