Uduak Akpan, the suspected killer of the late job seeker, Iniubong Umoren has pleaded guilty to murder.
Akpan entered the plea at the beginning of the trial of the matter at an Akwa Ibom State High Court, sitting in Uyo, the state capital.
The much-awaited trial of Akpan, the suspected killer of the late job seeker Iniubong Umoren begun at Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo with Justice Bennett Itaumoh presiding.
Akpan is standing trial along with his father, Frank Akpan, on a three-count charge of murder, rape, and accessory after the fact of murder.
When the charges were read to the accused persons, the first accused pleaded guilty to the first count of murder but pleaded not guilty to the second count of rape.
His father, who is the second accused, pleaded not guilty to the third count of accessory after the fact to murder.
The first accused had no legal representative which prompted the trial judge to appoint the state coordinator of the Legal Aid Council, Adula Samson, to represent him.
But the second accused was represented by a lawyer.
After taking their pleas, the trial judge adjourned the matter to August 18, 2021, for commencement of trial.
Prosecution counsel and Attorney General of the State, Uko Udom, SAN assured of a fair trial for the accused persons while counsel to the second accused, Em Ekomson Sr, said the law will take its course.
