The House of Representatives Joint Committee mandated to interface with the Federal Government and investigate the rationale behind the suspension of a social blogging site, Twitter commences sitting.

The committee’s sitting is coming 13 days after it was given a 10-day time frame to conclude its assignment.

Defending the Federal Government action, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, informed the committee that the micro blogging platform violated the country’s constitution by making its services avialable to certain groups trying to distabilize Nigeria arguing that any platform that threatens the internal security of the country cannot be allowed to operate.

The Minister emphasised that for yielding its platform to a group proscribed by the Federal Government, Twitter and its owners have violated Nigeria’s Anti Terrorism Act.

The Minister also blamed the microblogging platform for the escalation of the EndSARS protest accusing Jack Dorsey of crowdfunding protesters during demonstrations against police brutality in the country.

Speaking further, Mohammed alleged that the decision to indefinitely suspended Twitter operations in Nigeria became necessary as the platform became a national security risk adding that several activities on the platform have been inimical to the growth and stability of the country.
