South Korea fines Google $177 Million for Android Dominance!

Google has been fined by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) for anti-competitive practices.

The anti-trust regulator accused Google of using dominance to require smartphone makers to sign an anti-fragmentation agreement that prevents them from shipping phones with modified versions of Android.

The regulator also accuses Google of forcing Samsung to switch to a different operating system for its smartwatch device in 2013.

Korea has recently passed an amendment to one of its acts – the Telecommunications Business Act which prevents big technology corporations from demanding developers use their payment systems… read more on that here.

Should they run contrary to this new amendment, they could face fines of up to 3% by South Korean regulators. According to the KFTC, this practice alone has prevented its competition such as Alibaba and Amazon to thrive in the same industry.
