Astrazeneca Vaccine

South Africa recently discontinued the use of the Oxford-Astrazeneca Vaccine for front-line health workers after discovering little to no impact for the most widespread variant in the country.

The South African Nation announced the receipt of 1 million doses last week and planned to vaccinate health workers as the first line of defence against the pandemic.

The vaccine, however, proved little or no efficacy in curbing the dominant strain, which accounts for close to 90% of the cases in the country and offered only “mild protection against moderate disease”.

As a contingency plan, South Africa is considering the roll-out of other vaccines to fight the virus.

Experts are currently considering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which they say shows good results.

Oxford-AstraZeneca has also disclosed intentions to roll-out a modified version to cater to the South African COVID-19 variant as the United Kingdom recently recorded over 100 Cases.
