South Africa Regulators to sue WhatsApp over sharing of Data with Facebook

South African Information Ministry is looking to sue Facebook over its plan to share its WhatsApp data with its parent company on grounds that it violates the nation’s policy on the protection of personal information.

According to a representative, it had written to WhatsApp to either revise the policy or use the same standard allowed for the EU but the technology company had balked at the arrangement.

The new WhatsApp policy is expected to go into effect by May 15. Users who are yet to accept stated conditions will have their functionalities deprecated and will be unable to send or receive messages.

South Africa is not the only country contesting WhatsApp’s new data-sharing updates, India’s IT Industry had also earlier this year raised similar concerns on why the same policy does not apply to the EU.

WhatsApp hopes to shaare users phone numbersm and location with Facebook in its soon to be rolled out feature which was postponed earlier this year due to the major backlash it received.
