protests flood south africa in wake of zuma's detention

Pro-Zuma protesters marched the street as 79-year-old former president, Jacob Zuma handed himself over to begin a 15-month term. Police reported that hoodlums are hijacking the disorder which escalated from his home province of KwaZulu-Natal to Johannesburg in Gauteng.

The Nat JOINTS which is the national intelligence body, reported that about 300 people blocked the major highway in Johannesburg, South Africa’s economic hub. A police offer was shot and two others injured, while about 800 people were involved in an accident in Alexandra, a Johannesburg township.

There was a report of theft in both Johannesburg and KwaZulu-Natal. They have arrested more than 60 persons. It is not yet known if they are connected to the pro Zuma protests with KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Jay Naicker told news agency Reuters that officers had seen thieves and hoodlums trying to use this period to get rich quick.

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa pleaded with them to calm down on Saturday but the protesters didn’t heed as they marched out on Sunday with golf clubs, sticks and branches as they paraded through Johannesburg’s central business district.

Zuma’s team is attempting to have his sentence revoked or reduced when the matter returns to the Constitutional Court on Monday. The high court refused the idea of postponing his arrest to Friday
