Supporters of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) have continued to protest the Appeal Court’s judgment that sacked Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State.

But this time, it was the women supporters of the party who took their agitation to the police headquarters in Kano to protest what they called an injustice by the appellate court.

Although police authorities in the state have warned against protests, these women in their hundrieds, carried placards with diverse inscriptions and marched from the residence of the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election Rabiu Kwankwaso to the police headquarters on Sunday.

They are calling for justice, insisting that Governor Yusuf won the March governorship election in the North-West state. Some of them have also gone spiritual as the protests continued.

The most recent protest, coming about a week after the court verdict, is the third since the Appeal Court sacked the governor of the state over what it termed his ineligibility to contest the election.

Supplementary Budget: Fg Slashes Wage By N100bn, Labour Kicks

0

Labour unions, on Wednesday, lambasted the Federal Government for slashing the supplementary budgetary allocation for wage awards to federal civil servants by N100bn, warning that this was not the agreement they had with the government.

Data obtained from the newly Revised 2023 Supplementary Budget, indicated that the government swapped the controversial N5bn presidential yacht votes for Navy barges, increased the budget for defence from N476.54bn to N546.21bn and earmarked N20bn as capital supplementation for the National Intelligence Agency.

The recently approved N2.1tn 2023 Supplementary Budget was marred with controversy following the discovery of seemingly extravagant items, forcing an amendment by the National Assembly.

In the proposed document, the four-month wage award was to cost the Federal Government around N210bn. However, the approved and newly revised document showed that it would now cost the Federal Government about N110bn.

Also in the revised budget, the Ministry of Defence budget rose from N476.54bn to N546.21bn, indicating an additional allocation of N69.67bn.

Under the ministry, the Nigerian Navy, which was earlier caught up in the controversial N5.095bn for the purchase of a presidential yacht, got an additional N25bn to its total allocation.

Its total allocation rose from N62.8bn in the proposed supplementary budget to N87.8bn in the approved document.

Following the political crisis rocking Ondo State over the continued feud between Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and his deputy, Aiyedatiwa, the leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, and some elders in Ondo State have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the situation.

Fasoranti, who led other elder statesmen under the aegis of Ondo State Elders and Leaders, disclosed that the political crisis, particularly the absence of the governor, has been affecting governance in the state.

A communiqué signed by the Afenifere leader and the group’s secretary, Bakitta Bello, after an emergency meeting in Akure, the state capital, asserted that some people have hijacked the governance of the state.

The elders also maintained that if the development is not quickly addressed, it will no doubt affect the preparation of the 2024 budget.

While decrying the absence of the state in crucial national events due to the crisis, the elder statesmen said there is no clear direction within the state’s civil service.

Old Naira Notes: Govt Asks Supreme Court To Extend Bills’ Lifespan

0

Barely 40 days to the end of the year, the Federal Government has urged the Supreme Court to grant an extension of time for old naira notes to remain in circulation.

The government wants the apex court to lift its March 3 order that old naira notes should remain legal tender along with new notes till December 31.

It added that an extension of time is necessary because, due to the economic crisis, it has not been able to print the volume of new notes that would enable it to phase out old currency before December 31.

The Federal Government further explained that should the Supreme Court decline its request to extend the period of circulation of old notes, the country stands the risk of descending into another national, economic and financial crisis as witnessed in the first quarter of the year when the naira redesign policy was being implemented under former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele.
