We will abandon any cell site you shut down – Telcos

Nigerian Telco's to discontinue USSD over ₦42 Billion in Debts from Banks

Telecommunications companies operating across Nigeria have warned that henceforth, they will abandon any cell site closed down by a State Government. This is against the backdrop of many state governments indiscriminately shutting down their towers over what the Telcos insist, are unapproved taxes and levies.

Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, said their resolution to abandon any closed cell site had become necessary following incessant shutting down of their towers since the beginning of this year.

ATCON said that by recklessly shutting down cell sites, state governments were displaying a grave lack of understanding of the fact that electronic communications play a role in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents. Shutting down mobile telephony in a locality, it added, negatively affects businesses and communications between individuals. Also, telephone traffic from a shut-down cell site could have been re-routed to other cell sites, leading to very poor network service resulting from heavy traffic. Furthermore, Adebayo said, the success of the 2019 general elections could be marred if this practice of indiscriminate shutdown continues.

Adebayo added that apart from Lagos State, where taxes have been harmonized, the other states duplicate taxes and levies in different names, making compliance very difficult. He lamented that at the slightest delay in payments, state tax regulatory agencies quickly resort to closing down some of their critical network facilities. He mentioned a scenario when a cell site was shut down in Taraba during the Christmas season. Some of the taxes they are required to pay are aviation clearance, site Inspection Fee, hawking permit, building permit, building fitness, sewage fees, fumigation, refuse collection and disposal, capitation fee, shop rate, generator fumes tax and many more. He alleged that Telcos a forced to pay as many as 38 different taxes and levies.

He, therefore, called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take steps to ensure that telecommunications infrastructure is secure across the country in the same way as other critical national assets, suggesting that this could be done through the Cybercrime Act, 2015.

Meanwhile, in February 2018, the Association announced that it has sued the National Assembly over frequent and frivolous summons by various committees of the National Assembly over the same issues. It said that the constant invitation of their Chief Executive Officers and stakeholders affect their workflow and business operations.

Cybersecurity: How Cybersecure Are You?

0

Spyware. Spam. Trojans. Ransomware. Invaders from the cyber highway all of them. and they’re just a tip of the iceberg of risks you run as you begin to navigate the internet and subscribe to any of packages that make life and living so much more fun. For it’s not always safe fun out there. there’s always a cybersecurity risk.

Cyber-security is generally defined as the protection of software, hardware and processes from Cyber theft or Sabotage. Cyber-risk is manifested in many forms through the spread of spyware, spam, the spread of viruses and trojans, ransomware and rootkits. The growth of cybersecurity, unfortunately, rises with the spread of Internet availability. More people are now more vulnerable to cyber attacks than ever before.

The effect of not being security-conscious on online platforms could range from minor consequences such as being monitored by teenage hackers to very delicate issues such as ransomware attacks or literally shutting down huge organizations by defamation or loss of digital assets.

Cyber-security has gradually become a major concern because a large proportion of organizations are unaware of the threat that cyber-security poses. As close to 45% of organizations in civilized societies think they are not a viable target. Unfortunately, cyber-security is increasing at an alarming rate in Africa than in any other Continent, with South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya taking the lead. According to research estimates, Cyber-crime costs Nigeria alone at least $500 million per annum.

There is a need to generate more awareness regarding cybercrime in a bid to curb the scourge that cybercrime has become. There are many ways to improve cyber-security amongst us. Things, like being security conscious with our Bank cards and only performing transactions behind sites that are SSL security certified, could curb the frequency of cyber theft. Ensuring we have the latest security updates installed on our devices and reporting spam would definitely help Security Providers in creating more efficient security patches that malign the efforts of cybercriminals. Ignoring links from untrusted sources would also go a long way to reducing individual vulnerabilities.

Overall, generating immense awareness is key to ensure that cyber-security becomes a phenomenon that can be controlled and at best reduced to the barest minimum.

…Try, Banana and Roasted Groundnuts (peanut)

0

There are many meal combinations – going from the good to the great, the ridiculous, the wacky and the downright incredible. From good old pap and beans to the curious noodles and bread. And the snack options present another blue cloud of possibilities As for me, however, one of my favourite snack combos (and most Nigerians’ alike) is banana and groundnut. They are packed with several health benefits and can be found all year round. So it’s a win-win!

Banana

Bananas are very delicious and are a staple fruit all over the world – it’s not just a monkey thing (lol). It has multiple wonderful health benefits and should be added regularly to your daily dietary requirements.

Bananas are classified as nutritional powerhouses which contain several important vitamins and minerals such as potassium calcium, magnesium, iron, folate, niacin, vitamin B6, vitamin C, as well as antioxidants which can boost your overall health.

Here are some compelling reasons to eat bananas

  1.    It’s a great source of energy to start your day and also keeps your brain alert
  2.    Due to Its high amounts of potassium, bananas are great for Heart health as it can regulate heartbeat, lower blood pressure, etc. it is also good for your kidneys and bones.
  3.     It is high in fibre content and is low on calories but fills you up for longer periods of time
  4.    It has strong anti-oxidant properties which can help protect you from free radicals
  5.   Rich in Tryptophan, be guaranteed that eating bananas will boost your mood
  6.     Ladies, you would love this next reason – It reduces symptoms of PMS and also relieves morning sickness
  7.    Unripe (green) bananas have pectins and resistant starch that support the growth of good bacteria in the large intestine.
  8.    Some studies have shown that ripe bananas are about 8 times more effective in boosting white blood cells than green (unripe) bananas

Peanut

Peanuts (more popularly known as groundnuts here in Nigeria) are one of the cheapest, most popular nuts in Nigeria and are very readily found at every corner of the country. Just like the banana, its health benefits are numerous and can easily be carried around.

It’s amazing how Nigeria, at a point in time, was very renowned for its groundnut pyramids and how everything slowly faded out. The Chinese often recommend the use of peanut skin for people with low platelet counts. Here are reasons you need to take groundnuts more seriously and stock up on them.

1.    Studies show that it is an excellent source of biotin which increases your cognitive function and protects you from Alzheimer’s.

2.    It reduces the risk of mortality and developing chronic diseases

3.    It contains antioxidants and is a good source of fibre

4.    It lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol.

5.    It is high in protein and is a great source of energy.

6.    Groundnuts contain a trace amount of copper which is an essential micronutrient necessary for important physiological processes.

A creative way to combine them is by making a banana smoothie with sprinkled crushed groundnuts.

Bananas and groundnuts are tasty, perform wonders on the body and very pocket-friendly. So, when next someone calls you ‘local’ for snacking on them, just ignore and your body will thank you later!

Luck Runs Out on Hammer-Wielding Traffic Robber

0

Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit have apprehended a man believed to be robbing and terrorizing motorists along the Oshodi Bridge. He is 27-year-old Oluwole Kayode.

According to the operatives, Kayode’s method is to approach unsuspecting motorists, preferably, lone drivers, right inside the traffic gridlock that has become a regular feature in the Oshodi area, as a result of ongoing constructions and road rehabilitation. He pretends to be a hawker trying to sell soft drinks and water but ends up robbing them in the process.

The Chairman of the unit, Olayinka Egbeyemi, said in a communique that the suspect was apprehended by some of his men, who were stationed on the bridge. As stated by Egbeyemi, the thief broke the window on the driver’s side of a Toyota Corolla car with a hammer. He then proceeded to take two phones and a handbag containing personal effects.

All items stolen by the robber were however recovered, once he was apprehended and the owner, Mrs. Hadizatul Jiddah was called to retrieve the items. She praised the unit for their swift response.

Plastic Fish Reports, a Hoax

NAFDAC

As the fear over the presence of synthetic and unwholesome foods continues to grip Nigerians and the world at large, Nigerians can rest assured that neither plastic rice, vegetables, eggs nor fish have yet to make it to the Nigerian market.

Plastic Fish From China Looking Like Real Fishes

According to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), even the recent reports of the presence of plastic fish in the country are false.

This claim is contained in a release the agency issued in Abuja during the week. It said, following thorough investigations and laboratory analyses of suspected plastic fish, the claim could not be substantiated. The agency noted that the need for the scientific interrogations was triggered by reports from a consumer who alleged that the fish he bought refused to cook after several attempts.

However, the said fish was found to contain protein and fat present in regular fish but, also had some bacteria, owing to contamination. NAFDAC, therefore, concluded that rather than being plastic, the said fish was actually a previously wholesome product which had become contaminated somewhere along the line.

This notwithstanding, the agency encouraged Nigerians to carefully observe whatever fish they purchase and promptly report suspicions of unhealthy products in markets to the closest NAFDAC office.

The Bridal Market of Bulgaria… Love At a Price

0
A Roma girl speaks with a boy at an open-air 'bride market' in the central village of Mogila on March 12, 2011. Wearing lots of make-up, the girls come to the traditional annual market in Bulgaria, hoping to find a husband - and preferably one willing to pay a large amount of money for his future spouse. At the market in the village of Mogila near Stara Zagora, the price of a beautiful young woman is said to be several thousand levs/euros. As a girl or young woman, have you ever thought of being married off to the highest bidder by your own family? Have you ever thought of meeting a complete stranger and becoming his legally married wife a few hours later? Have you ever thought of being put on a platform and auctioned off like every other good, with members of your own family applauding every new bid? Welcome to Bulgaria! Welcome to the world of the Kalaidzhi!

Culture is part of every society, and for most Bulgarians, culture is everything, especially, among the Kalaidzhi of the South Eastern region, who have instituted a yearly bridal market, strictly for buying (sorry, marrying) wife.

At the annual festival, single women of Kalaidzhi are given out to financially buoyant men by their immediate families. Kalaidzhis are only allowed to marry from within their tribe, and the Kalaidzhi bridal market day is the only option and opportunity for most of them to ever find love or get married.

The tribe subscribes to an orthodox Christian faith that prevents them from flirting or having any pre-marital relationship, and since they cannot marry out of their tribe, the Bride Market is their only chance of ever having a life partner.

Although a lot of youths in Bulgaria have protested against this tradition, as they believe they should have the liberty of choosing their own life partners, the practice has persisted for centuries.

This bridal market takes place every year at the Bachkovo Monastery.

Teenage girls, sometimes as young as 15, are put up for marriage. Of course, love is not even primary or paramount as long as their dowries are paid.

Culture is a part of every society but the question we ask is, should all cultures be observed and adhered to? Should true love ever come at a material price? Or better still, should love be monetized?

Insurgence Fund: Presidency Explains Process, Defends Cost

0

The presidency has responded to criticisms by opposition politicians on the proposed purchased of military hardware for combating insurgency to the tune of $1 billion.

Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on media, Garba Shehu, said the purchase could not be made without the approval of the National Assembly, adding that the purchase could not, therefore, be said to be secretive.

Speaking on a broadcast platform earlier today, Garba Shehu stated that there is nothing secretive or controversial as the Federal executive council had also debated and approved the contents of the proposal.

According to him, funds are required by the police, military and other security agents in order to upgrade the depleting stock.

Similarly, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in a separate reaction, also admonished critics of the government to stop ascribing the approval of funds to combat insurgents to politics and appealed for more investigations before reactions are made public.
