2018 BUDGET TO BE READY END OF APRIL

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Education, Hon. Zakari Mohammed has reassured that the country’s 2018 budget will ready at the end of April.

He spoke to newsmen in Ogbomoso while attending an empowerment programme organized by his All Progressives Congress (APC) colleague, Hon. Segun Ogunwuyi, who represents Ogbomoso North/South/Oriire Federal Constituency.

Zakari Mohammed, who represented the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said the federal lawmakers had a duty to ask for detailed information from the Executives, as the legislators could not manufacture figures. He insisted that, contrary to the impression being created by several vested interests desperate to malign the National Assembly, the delay in passing the budget was owing to lack of co-operation from some ministers. He is, however, optimistic that by the end of April, Nigeria will have a budget.

The lawmaker called on the executive arm of government to improve means of generating revenue so that the budget can be implemented, as the rate of budget performance has been on the decline.

He also urged the people of Ogbomoso North/South/Oriire Federal constituency to ensure Ogunwuyi’s re-election to the National Assembly in 2019. He explained that a first timer to the National Assembly will need more than three years to learn the process of lawmaking and that the lawmaking template they operated was in consonance with longevity.

RED…is still the colour of Manchester

…Mourinho’s army keeps EPL title celebration on ice, inflicting 2-3 home defeat on Man. City

Pride, determination, shock and a little bit of desperation were all on show yesterday in Manchester, as the Red Devils came from two goals down to silence their ‘Noisy Neighbours’ in a Manchester derby that seemed to have nothing but pride at stake.

And midfielder Paul Pogba, who put up a man-of-match performance, would capture it in his post-match interview with Arsenal and France legend Thiery Henry. According to Pogba, it was unthinkable that Man. United fans would be the ones to sit at the stadium, in the blue half of Manchester, and watch the Citizens celebrating the league win, having literally been handed the trophy by, of all teams, their bitter city rivals.

Surely, this has got to be one of the most exhilarating comebacks ever made this Premier League (2017/2018) season.

It was a beautiful game at the Etihad stadium in Manchester as the Red Devil fought hard to win the game. It was a bleak first half for Manchester United as Manchester City took the lead with a header scored by Captain Vincent Company followed by Ilkay Gundogan’s wonderfully crafted goal.

Man. City’s Manager, Pep Guardiola must have been furious with the number of scoring chances missed by his team, particularly Raheem Sterling. Five minutes into the first half, there was a controversial decision made by the referee not to grant City a penalty, arising from Ashley Young’s dangerous tackle.

The Citizens had the statistics in their favour but sadly, United woke up from their slumber in the second half. Pogba’s brace within two minutes (53rd and 55th) and the third from Smalling at the 69th minute, sealed United’s victory. Pogba (man of the match) redeemed himself with this comeback as fans hadn’t been satisfied with his previous performance.

Guardiola who had rested some of his key stars, ahead of Wednesday’s decisive Champions League quarter-finals return leg with Liverpool, later brought on Sergio Aguero, but it still did not change the fortunes of his team.

City will now have to wait a bit longer to be crowned premier league champions, possibly at their next game with Tottenham this Saturday.

NASS to criminalize ‘estimated billing’

A major change will be lurking in the corners for electricity distribution companies as a bill seeking to criminalize the use of ‘estimated billing’ in the computation of electricity used by Nigerian consumers has passed the first reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The bill which is sponsored by the House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (APC, Lagos) who represents Surulere I. Federal constituency, contains sections which seek to criminalize the random estimation of power consumed by consumers who have not yet been supplied pre-paid meters.

In a press release, media aide Olarenwaju Smart quoted the lawmaker as saying that the bill was necessitated by complaints from Nigerians across the country, who felt that regulations put in place by the executive failed to curb the high-handedness of electricity distribution companies. He also added that the legislation will resolve the problems arising from technical altering of existing pre-paid meters which leads to an incommensurate calculation of purchased electricity credit.

If the bill is passed into law, officials of electricity distribution companies who have been found guilty of illegally disconnecting a consumer or failing to provide a pre-paid meter for a consumer after 30 days of application will be liable to six months imprisonment.

The lawmaker gave the assurance that, irrespective of party affiliation, legislators will keep pushing until the bill is signed into law.

Kill cervical cancer before it kills you

0

Cervical cancer starts to grow in the lower part of the uterus called the cervix which is connected to the top part of the vagina. It can be caused by several predisposing factors such as human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, having multiple sexual partners, contraceptives, smoking, etc.

The most common cause of cervical cancer is prolonged human papillomavirus (HPV virus) infection and is transmitted through sexual or skin to skin contact. However, it’s not all types of the HPV virus that cause cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer in females in developing countries and second leading cause of cancer in females in Nigeria, according to the World Health Organisation. Statistics show that a woman dies every two minutes from cervical cancer around the world and is mainly common in women from ages 14 to 45 years.

Pap smear

Pap smears are cervical screening exams done to check if you’re at risk of cervical cancer. Routine testing is advisable to keep you abreast of your reproductive health. The guidelines for women’s first Pap smear test should be 21 years but ideally from the time women become sexually active. The doctor scoops little samples of the cervix tissues to test for any changes in the cells. If test results are abnormal, further testing will be conducted to check for precancerous changes or cancer.

Medical practitioners are currently trying to raise awareness for the tests to be done more regularly, as regular testing can help reduce the prevalence and mortality of the disease. Knowing your diagnosis early greatly improves your chances of survival and can very often be cured if discovered early. Vaccines are now available to prevent the most common types of HPV virus.

Free screening

Two major challenges faced with routine testing are expenses and enlightenment. Currently, there are very few clinics and foundations that offer free cervical cancer screenings. One place which still offers free screening, every Friday, is Optimal Cancer Care Foundation in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria.

The government needs to organize more campaigns to educate more women on cervical cancer and screening as well as offering free cervical screening services to the public.

Remember, regular cervical screening can literally save your life, so ensure you get tested, ladies!

Barca & Messi: More than just Sociedad’s record

0
Messi

Fresh off an injury that kept Messi sidelined during the International football week, the little magician is back to his vintage self again, despite reports from the Barcelona medical team that he is not playing at 100% fitness just yet.

Barcelona played Leganes in the week 31 round of fixtures and Messi was spectacular as expected.

As usual, it was champagne football, with Leganes giving as much as they took – well, nearly as much.

Even as Ivan Rakitic, Philippe Cuotinho, Sergio Roberto and the rest of the Blaugrana put up five-star performances, the little god from Argentina made all the difference, weighing in with a hat-trick – with goals coming in the 27th, 32nd and 87th minute. This puts his tally of hat-tricks at 29 in the league making him 2nd place to his rival and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo who has 34 in the league. But that was only one of the records that came tumbling yesterday. Messi’s goals also put him at par with Liverpool’s Mo Sallah (29), as the highest haul so far in Europe’s top five leagues this season.

The win means Barca have taken a major leap in the bid to dethrone Real Madrid for the title this season. But most importantly Barcelona are on track to finish the season unbeaten, an accolade that has been achieved by teams like AC Milan, Arsenal, Juventus and a few others. With just seven games left to play, they have won 24 games, drawn 7 games and haven’t lost any games.

Also with this win in week 31, Barcelona has gone on to equal the longest unbeaten run in La Liga history (38 games), equaling the record set by Real Socieded between 1979 and 1980.

The toughest match of the seven remaining games is an El Classico game against bitter rivals Real Madrid on the 6th of May 2017 at the Camp Nou. Real Madrid, whose title hopes have since vanished, will look to beat Barcelona by any means necessary to kill their hopes of going unbeaten for the whole season.

Ronaldo, especially, would be motivated as completion of this feat will give Messi a slight edge in the football world and the never-ending argument of who the better player between the two is.

US Sanctions key Putin Allies

In the most aggressive action by the Donald Trump administration against Russia, The United States has imposed sanctions against seven Russian oligarchs with close ties to President Vladimir Putin.

Among those affected are aluminum czar Oleg Deripaska, businessman and lawmaker Suleiman Kerimov and senior Russian official Alexander Torshin

This move is the latest in escalating retaliatory countermoves following the poisoning of former Russian double agent, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia, which saw Russia expel 60 US diplomats on April 5th after the US placed sanctions on 19 Russian individuals and five entities for “attempted interference in U.S. elections, destructive cyber-attacks, and intrusions targeting critical infrastructure” on March 15th.

The US’ tough stance on Russia contrasts sharply with president Trump’s softer approach towards Russian president Vladimir Putin, with whom, earlier this week, he said he hoped to continue on good terms.

The response from Russia has been swift. The Interfax news agency reports Russia’s embassy in Washington as saying “Washington has delivered yet another blow on the Russian-US relations. Now, the sanctions cover captains of Russian business who refuse to play to Washington’s scenario.”

To date, Trump’s administration has sanctioned a total of 189 Russian individuals and entities, according to a senior administration official.

US and North Korea in Secret Talks

0

Emergent intelligence reveals United States President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un may have been holding secret talks in order to prepare for a summit. This may be a further indication that preparation for the highly anticipated meeting between the two leaders is progressing.

Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo and his team are believed have been working to make preparations for the summit, officials say. A CNN report claims American and North Korean intelligence officials have dialogued a few times and have actually met in a third country, with an effort at mapping out a location for the talks.

Although the North Korean administration has not openly acknowledged its invitation by Kim Jong Un to meet with Trump, which was conveyed last month by a South Korean envoy, other officials say North Korea has since accepted Trump’s agreement, and Pyongyang has reiterated that Kim is willing to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Record-Breaking Match for Equality

0

Following their first football game at the highest point in the world (Mount Kilimanjaro), a group of brave courageous women have their sights set on playing the first football match at the lowest point of the globe; the Dead Sea is the lowest point on dry land.

Agency reports say a group consisting of 40 women both retired and current internationals will be taking part in the journey. The event starts with a 12-day trek around Jordan that is currently on, then it would be concluded with a 90-minute 11-a-side football match at the Dead Sea.

Should they be successful, they would be on course to set the record for highest-point and lowest-point football games played, all within one year.

The aim is to bring about gender equality in sports and to bring about inclusion for girls in the Middle Eastern region who have probably never engaged in sports of any sort. It’s being organized by an organization known as “Equal Playing Field”. His Royal Highness Prince Al Bin Al Hussein and the Asia Football Development Project are supporting this event. The event will be taking place from April 6 to April 13, 2018.
