Attempts were made to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s aide, Serhiy Shefir, as shots were fired at his car, according to a senior government official. A police statement stated the car was hit by more than ten bullets on Wednesday near the town of Lesnyky, approximately five kilometers outside the capital Kyiv.

The driver of the car was hurt in the collision. According to a police report, a case had been initiated on suspicion of premeditated murder. Shefir had not been hurt, according to a senior legislator from Zelenskyy’s Servant of the People party. Shefir, 57, is one of the president’s closest aides and oversees a team of advisers.

Davyd Arakhamia was quoted by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti as stating, “I briefly spoke to him, everything is good, he is alive and well.” Zelenskyy, who was elected president on a campaign of taking on the country’s oligarchs and battling corruption, is currently in the United States for the United Nations General Assembly.

His office stated Zelenskyy had been informed and would have something to say soon. According to Zelenskyy adviser Mykhailo Podolyak, the president’s efforts to take on the oligarchs may be the motivation for the shooting. It’s obvious that we link this attack to a more aggressive and even militant campaign against the president’s active foreign policy, Podolyak said Interfax Ukraine.

The Ukrainian parliament is set to discuss a presidential law aimed at curbing the power of oligarchs this week, one of his campaign promises.
