Nigerian Troops Repel Attacks on Sokoto, Yobe Base, Lose Soldiers

The Nigerian military says it successfully repelled an attack by suspected Islamic States for West African Province, ISWAP, terrorists on one of its bases in Sokoto State near the border with Niger Republic.

A statement by The spokesperson, Major General Benjamin Sawyerr, however, said some soldiers, number of which he did not mention, were killed.

He hinted that the Sunday morning attack was on a forward operating base in Burkusuma, of Sabo Birni local Government Area, and saw the attackers using telecom network provided from neighbouring country, and thereafter capitalised on the lean rear area protection force when the Nigerian troops were out conducting offensive operations within their area of responsibility.

Gen Sawyerr noted that reinforcements by Nigerian troops helped to counter the attack as many of the ISWAP fighters were eliminated while some scrambled with various degrees of injuries, resulting to their pursuit to Bassira in Niger Republic.

Soldiers from that country have teamed up with those from Nigeria, and are currently trailing the remaining ISWAP fighters.

Meanwhile, a statement by the Army spokesperson, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, said in similar encounter, troops of Operation HADIN KAI in the North East, have killed two Islamic State West Africa Province/ Boko Haram insurgents while repelling the insurgents’ attempt to infiltration Babangida community, in Tarmuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State, on Sunday, September 26, 2021.

One of the terrorist was apprehended while several arms recovered from the operation.
