In a statement released on the 12th of February 2020, The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the appointment of former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo as the new assistant coach of the men’s national team. The former Everton defender comes in as a replacement for Imama Amapakabo.
Yobo’s appointment has come with some scrutiny as the veteran has no coaching experience, neither as he acquired his coaching badges.
Nevertheless, his appointment is seen as a step in the right direction to inspire the new breed of Super Eagles to championship victories, starting with the African Cup of Nations set to take place in Cameroon between the 9th of January and February 6th.
Also, the appointment of Joseph Yobo seems to be a continuation of a trend in club football now taken to international football. Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea all have former players as their current head coaches.
Former players who are influential with a good understanding of the culture and know-how to win major trophies after being under the tutelage of great managers.
Joseph Yobo successfully lead the Super Eagles to their 2013 African Cup of Nations under the guidance of the late Stephen Keshi. The Former Everton and Fenerbache defender was also voted in the best of Africa XI for 2007/2008 season.
Hopefully, his years of experience and success would inspire the Super Eagles to more championship victories in the future.
