Nigeria wins first gold medal at Tokyo 2020 paralympic games

Nigeria has won its first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 paralympic games. Silver medalist at the Rio 2016 games, Latifah Tijani, improved her performance by lifting 107kg to win gold in the women’s up to 45kg powerlifting.

The 39-year-old failed in her first attempt to lift 105 kg she had a successful second attempt before lifting 107 kg in her third attempt.

She took a shot at the paralympic record when she attempted to lift 117kg in her fourth attempt but was not successful.

The 2019 world para powerlifting bronze medalist and 2015 African games gold medal winner was just one kg short of the paralympic record set by Hu Hadan of china in Rio five years ago.

Cui Zhe of China came in second with 102 kg while Justyna Kozdryk who finished just outside the medal zone in Rio claimed the bronze medal after lifting 101kg.
