The police in Niger State have arrested three suspected gun runners and recovered 567 ammunition from them.

The Police Highway Patrol team intercepted them along the Makera-Mokwa road.

The gun runners are 32-year-old Muhammad Bello and 30-year-old Nura Umar.

The two suspects, according to the Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, Monday Kuryas, refused to stop for the police to check their vehicle.

The suspects abandoned their vehicles, trying to run away. They were caught by the members of the community and handed over to the police.

Two AK-47 rifles, two AK-49 rifles, 16 magazines, 417 live ammunition of 7.63 calibres, and 150 RPG live ammunition were discovered during the search.

Twenty-five year old Habib Sani, the third gun runner, was arrested at Swashi village while trying to transport 14 locally fabricated rifles from Kanti village in Mashegu Local Government Area to Gufanti Community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

Parading the suspects, the Commissioner of Police said that 14 locally fabricated double-barrel and eight triple barrel guns were concealed in a sack they had.

Kuryas hinted that the first two suspects were arrested while transporting the arms from Sokoto to a receiver called Yellow in Mokwa.

Sani told the police that a local gun fabricator by the name of Bilya gave him the guns to deliver to one Bulus in Gufanti village.

Kuryas further said that the three gun runners during the investigation confessed to their crimes.

He assured members of the public that the suspects would be taken to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
