At least 73 people have been confirmed dead in renewed clashes between the Hausa Fulani and Yandang communities of Taraba state. Over 47 villages were also burnt in the violence in the Lau local government area of the state.

State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Sahabi Mahmoud, told journalists in Jalingo that the hostilities, which started on July 5, has claimed the lives of more than 23 of his members.

An elder of the Yandang community, Aaron Artimas, who also spoke to journalists said more than 50 persons from Yandang and other tribes in the area have been confirmed dead as a result of the violence.

Artimas blamed the recurring conflicts on incitement from people outside the area who wanted to remain relevant politically.

The Taraba Police Public Relations Officer, ASP David Misal, who confirmed the incident, however, said the number of casualties is still being compiled, while assuring that normalcy has been restored in the affected areas.
