Torrential rains in Iraq: Floods displace thousands, kill several

Nearly 85 families fled their homes in various areas of the northern city of Mosul following two days of flash floods over the weekend.

The rainy weather adds more burdens on the residents who are yet to recover from the devastating aftermath of the war against the Islamic State.

The heavy rain paralysed traffic, brought schools and offices to a halt and closed main roads in the former Islamic State stronghold.

Six bridges and 300 tents in the Nimrud refugee camp were reportedly damaged as a result of the heavy rainfall.

The floods, after unusually heavy and early rainfall in recent weeks across different parts of Iraq, have piled more pressure on Iraq’s new government to provide services and fix infrastructure in provinces hard-hit by the 2014-17 war against Islamic State militants, and by years of neglect that critics blame on corruption.
