#ElectionDay: Crowds rush into polling station in Abuja following early delays

Voters in the Nigerian capital Abuja were left waiting for election officials who only appeared several hours after polls were meant to open on Saturday.

When gates to the city’s Maraba polling centre were eventually opened the large crowd gathered outside rushed through, while some people resorted to climbing over a fence to gain entry.

A woman who collapsed to the floor during the rush was assisted by fellow voters.

Nigeria’s elections were postponed by a week to February 23 just five hours before polling units were set to open last Saturday (February 16), causing shock and disappointment among many voters.

The electoral commission said the postponement was due solely to logistical factors and denied political pressure had played any part in the decision.
