China has reiterated its position on the case of Huawei’s chief financial officer (CFO) Meng Wanzhou, urging Canada to release her immediately, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in Beijing on Monday.
Spokesman Lu Kang made the comments on Meng’s lawyers’ suing the Canadian government, its border agency and police. The lawyers argued that Meng was detained, searched and interrogated for three hours in violation of her constitutional rights.
Meng, also the daughter of Chinese tech giant Huawei’s founder, was arrested during transit in Vancouver on December 1 at the request of the United States. Washington claims that Meng has violated U.S. sanctions against Iran.
The U.S. and Canada have abused their bilateral extradition agreement and arbitrarily taken compulsory measures against a Chinese citizen, which constitutes a serious violation of the legal rights and interests of the Chinese citizen,” the spokesman said.
