Portuguese tennis chair umpire, Carlos Ramos has defended his officiating of last week’s US Open women’s final involving eventual champion, Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams.
The final was shrouded with Serena’s emotional meltdown wherein she accused the chair umpire, Carlos Ramos of sexism, which has sparked a debate in tennis.
During the match, Carlos docked Serena a point and a game for three code violations.
When quizzed about the incident and his opinion of his officiating, Carlos Ramos reportedly said, “It’s an unhappy situation but a-la-carte refereeing doesn’t exist. Don’t you worry about me! I am good, under the circumstances.”
He has been backed by tennis governing body, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), who defended his officiating as playing by the rulebook.
Carlos Ramos will be back in the umpire’s chair on Friday in Zadar, Croatia to officiate the Davis Cup semi-final match between Croatia and the US.
