Los Angeles Lakers legend, Magic Johnson announced his shock resignation from his role as the team’s president of basketball operations, just over two years at the job.
Johnson, who played a key role in bringing LeBron James to the Lakers last year, broke the news barely an hour before the 104-101 loss to Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.
He acknowledged not discussing his decision with the team’s president, Jeanie Buss nor the Lakers’ general manager, Rob Pelika.
Magic Johnson was investigated four times by the NBA for alleged tampering as well as having a frosty relationship with coach Luke Walton.
He acknowledged the ‘back-stabbing and whispering” all season contributed to his decision.
The Lakers in a statement appreciated Magic for all he has done for the franchise, saying there is no greater Laker than Earvin Johnson.
