Kogi State Government says it will now be an offence to see school-age children not in school during school hours, as it begins full implementation of its education law, from the first term of 2021/2022 academic session.

Kogi State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Wemi Jones, who spoke to reporters in Lokoja, the state capital, said the law would help in the discipline of erring teachers and regulate the operation of substandard schools in the state.

The Kogi State House of Assembly passed the Kogi State Education Law 2020 and was assented to by the state Governor, Yahaya Bello, to effectively regulate the operations of education in the state.

One of the concerns of the Kogi State government which has education as number one in its thematic areas is the issue of out-of-school children which the law is to enforce.

Jones said the proliferation of private schools in the state is an issue the state seeks to address, using the education law.

As the state prepares to clamp down on substandard private schools in the bid to ensure standard, are the government-owned schools habitable for learning?

The Kogi State Education Law seeks to criminalize unethical conduct among teachers, educational administrators, proprietors of private schools, with consultations already in the pipeline to meet with critical stakeholders that will drive the implementation.
