The appointment of American footballer, Colin Kaepernick as Nike’s new advert face has been met with fierce protests, as fans of the brand who are against Colin Kaepernick have flooded social media with videos of burnt Nike kits, accompanied with the hashtag #JustBurnIt.
This has shocked many as the ad in question has the wordings
“Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything”.
The words are not infuriating on any note, but rather address the theme of belief and relentless pursuit of the truth.
It is obvious that some quarters dislike Colin Kaepernick due to his kneeling protests during the US national anthem against racial injustice and police brutality; nonetheless, it is alarming that fans can go to this length to protest against his appointment as a face for Nike.
This is an athlete raising awareness against social injustices, who ought to be revered but is being maligned for standing for great ideals and the truth. For some, this is certainly one protest that shouldn’t hold water because it is meaningless.
