American tennis legend, Jim Courier has stepped down from his position as the US Davis Cup team captain after eight years at the helm.
The announcement which comes less than two weeks after the Americans lost a nerve-biting five game thriller to the Croatians was made by the US Tennis Association.
The official release did not give any reason why Courier is quitting job but Jim Courier said he had taken the decision to quit at the end of this year, a year ago.
While there are rumours that the change in the Davis Cup format probably birthed Courier’s decision, he dispelled that in a statement where he wrote, “The reason I made 2018 my final year was my view that eight years was the right amount of time for me to lead the team, the format change did not factor into my thinking, as it was far from a certainty when I made the decision”.
During his tenure, the US had a 10-8 record in the World Group play and got to the semifinals twice. The US has won a record 32 Davis Cup titles, though the last was in 2007.
