Israel to Rejoin African Union as Spectator since 2002 Exit
Yair Lapid,

Israeli ambassador to Ethiopia, Aleleign Admasu, has submitted documents as a spectator to the African Union for the very first time since its exit in 2002. The African Union is the continent’s largest and most powerful organization, with 55 member countries.

Yair Lapid, Israel’s Foreign Minister, acknowledged that it’s a day to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Israel’s establishment of diplomatic relations with Africa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs coupled with the African Division and Israeli embassies have worked harder to ensure diplomatic success in Africa.

This corrects a discrepancy that has existed for nearly two decades and is a key aspect of Israel’s foreign policy fabric. It will assist us in strengthening our work on the African continent and with the organization’s member states.

Israel has 46 African countries with which it maintains broad ties and mutual collaboration in a variety of industries, including commerce and aid. In past years, Israel has reestablished diplomatic connections with Chad and Guinea, while Sudan has announced the rehabilitation of relations with Israel following its acceptance of the Abraham Accords.

The two sides will work as one to combat different areas of concern once Israel’s observer status with the African Union is formalized. This includes fighting the Coronavirus and preventing extremist terrorist attacks from spreading across the continent.
