Following the continuous rise of prices of food commodities in Nigeria, residents of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, have attributed partial border closure, high cost of petrol also known as Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, per liter, and poor economic policies as major reasons for the ugly trend.
The people of the state disclosed this while speaking with reporters in Ilorin, calling on the Federal Government to wake up to its responsibilities by ensuring that Nigerians do not die of starvation.
At the Ipata market in Ilorin, where many residents normally purchase their foodstuff at a cheaper rate, the case is now different as prices of foodstuff like rice, beans, Semo Vita, and others have skyrocketed
This development did not only affect the consumers of these items who blamed poor government policies and partial border closure on the trend but the traders are also battling with low patronage.
Some of the residents also maintained that if the government fails to address the issue of the hike on food commodities, it will have a terrible effect on the forthcoming Ramadan.
As many households continue to battle with various difficulties like the non-regular daily meal, hike on house rent, transportation, and others, time will tell if the government will keep pretending not to know the plight of Nigerians or wake up to its responsibilities by making policies that will have positive impacts on all.
