Gunmen late Sunday staged a fresh attack on a police facility in Ohaukwu, some few kilometres from the Ebonyi State Police Command Headquarters in Abakiliki, the state capital.

Sources said the heavily armed attackers reportedly killed a Police Inspector in a gun duel with operatives on night duty.

At least two operational vehicles parked at the premises of the Divisional Station were set ablaze with explosives while parts of the building were equally torched.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Loveth Odah, who confirmed the incident to reporters, said a strong resistance on the hoodlums by the policemen on duty, repelled further attacks, thereby denying the gunmen access to the station’s armoury.

Odah said the slain policeman died in the hospital due to the gun injuries he sustained during the attack.

The latest attack on the police station comes barely two weeks after gunmen stormed two communities of Isu and Onicha-Igboeze in the Onicha Local Government Area of the state, killing at least eight persons including two policemen and two lawyers.

The police in Abakaliki said that they have opened investigations into the latest incident even as nothing has been heard of previous investigations on armed men attacks in the Ebonyi State.
