There was a palpable tension in Ekpo-Abasi Axis of Calabar South Local Government Area on Friday as gunmen suspected to be cultists went on a rampage in the Cross River State University of Technology, CRUTECH, killing one person and forcing students out of the hostels.

The gunmen, who matched some students toward the security gate of the university, allegedly beat up the institution’s private security guards in the process of moving out of the Schoool.

Hours later, students in their hundreds staged a protest over the incident, saying the university environment is becoming unsafe for them.

Eyewitness accounts that the gunmen were moving from hostel to hostel threatening to kill anyone who disobeys their directive.

Cross River Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the incident, said anti-riot police operatives with the support of other security agencies have been drafted to the university to forestall peace and order around the area.

Meanwhile, the management of the CRUTECH has shut down the Calabar campus of the institution.

This development according to the management was meant to secure lives and property, following the killing and attack on students by hoodlums and the tension therefrom.

Students were directed to vacate the campus immediately for their safety.
