Gunmen have reportedly attacked people at two separate political gatherings in Anambra State, South East Nigeria killing at least two persons.

Police in the area have confirmed the two shooting incidents which have left several others wounded.

Sources said that one of the attacks occurred late Sunday at a local ward meeting of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, in Uruagu community, Nnewi.

It was gathered that the gunmen arrived at the venue of the APC gathering, shot sporadically killing one person while another is critical at an undisclosed hospital in the area.

The second incident on same Sunday evening, involving a chieftain of the ruling party in Anambra State, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, occurred at Nnobi in Idemili South Council Area.

The APGA chieftain was attacked and a branded campaign vehicle of the party was also set ablaze.

The Anambra State Police Command spokesman, Tochukwu Ikenga, told reporters that the yet-to-be-identified gunmen struck at the Uruagu Nnewi political event at about 7 pm on Sunday.

He said that the State Commissioner of Police, Tony Olofu, has ordered an investigation into the two shooting incidents with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.
