Today is the day that Derek Chauvin, the white officer who knelt on George Floyd’s neck till he gave up the ghost stands trial and many in the United States are on edge.

Derek Chauvin is currently standing trial for second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He could face as many as 15 years in prison if found culpable.

The trial is quite bespoke as it represents for the black community an all too knowing awareness of the racial divide that has eaten deep into the U.S system.

10 months since his passing, the African American community remain steadfast in their call for justice for George Floyd whose death circumstances sparked global outrage.

As his trial commences, shops close to the court house in Minneapolis have shut down due to security reasons, the intersection where he gruesomely lost his life remains closed to traffic.

Although comcrete barriers encircle the county government building, protesters were seen demonstrating outside the courthouse with plans to sustain the tempo till the trial is concluded.
