Samuel Ortom, the Benue State Governor has in an interview with reporters accused the army of killing Terwase Akwaza, the ex-gang leader while on his way to Makurdi after accepting amnesty.
According to the Governor, Gana was killed on his way to Markurdi, while being conveyed with 42 other repentant criminals. Mr Ortom also gave a similar view to reporters on Wednesday, at a banquet hall in Markurdi.
According to Premium Times, Gana had accepted the Amnesty program and was being welcomed in his local government in Benue state. a reception was organized for him in Katsina-Ala by Sankara Traditional Council.
He was stopped on his way to Markurdi alongside police officers and shot dead by soldiers who shot him dead. In an army statement, they said it is not clear if the soldiers responsible for killing Gana killed him knowing he had accepted amnesty or if it was simply a case of poor communication.
Tukur Baratai, chief of Army Staff, declined comment on the issue. However, on Tuesday, the army announced that the cause of Gana’s death was as a result of a Gun duel.
The Commander, 4 Special Forces Command, Doma, Nasarawa state, Moundhey Ali, told journalists on Tuesday that Gana’s death was as a result of a gun duel at a roadblock along Gboko-Makurdi road. Mr Ali, however, didn’t confirm any injuries on the army part or evidence on gunshots made by Gana.
