The Federal Government has launched the pilot scheme of the National Livestock Transformation Project in Nasarawa State, north-central Nigeria.
President Muhammadu Buhari in a message delivered by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, said the project is a step in the right direction to end farmers/herder clashes in the country.
Clashes between farmers and herders have been a major challenge for the Nigerian government.
The first approach was the ruga settlement, the idea was, however, not embraced by many states. The Federal Government in another effort to tackle the issue came up with the National Livestock Transformation Plan project, a scheme expected to end the clashes between farmers and herders in the long run.
The Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, and his Plateau State counterpart, Simon Lalong, said that they are on the same page with the Federal Government on the project, as there is a need for ranching of livestock in the country.
The National Livestock Transformation Project was adopted by the National Executive Council, NEC, on January 18, 2019.
Four states were selected by the Federal Government; for now, for the plan and they include Nasarawa, Adamawa, Plateau, and Kaduna States
