One of the most scrutinized performances thus far of the year is that of Will Smith playing as the Genie in the live-action Disney remake of Aladdin.
There has been a major backlash from the casting and the constant comparison of performances between Smiths performance to the previously played Genie, Robin Williams in the most beloved 1992 animated edition.
The initial trailers released have resulted in the ‘Men In Black’ star getting meme’d or mocked, and more seriously, accused of ridiculing the memory of Robin Williams.
Smith admitted to a magazine interview, he also noticed that everything was under such critical scrutiny, causing him to sit out from the on-camera interview on the films press day.
However, since the premiere, the tone is slowing changing as people are beginning to see Smith’s effort in making Genie into his own rather than following the path of Robins.
