DRC Polls: AU wants CENI to 'suspend' final results

The African Union, AU, has advised CENI, the electoral authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, to suspend the final publication of results from its presidential polls.

The AU expressed its grave concerns over the electoral vote collation process that led to Felix Tshisekedi emerging winner of the presidential elections.

“The Heads of State and Government attending the meeting concluded that there were serious doubts on the conformity of the provisional results, as proclaimed by the National Independent Electoral Commission, with the votes cast.

“Accordingly, the Heads of State and Government called for the suspension of the proclamation of the final results of the elections,” a communique read in part.

The AU disclosed this in a meeting in Addis Ababa and also presented a crisis resolution roadmap to effecting national peace in the DRC.

Although no specific time had been agreed upon, the AU would be paying a visit to the DRC. A delegation led by the Rwandan president would take part in an interaction with the Congolese stakeholders in order to agree on a way out for the country’s post-election crisis.
