Darts World Championship: Michael van Gerwen wins third title

Dutchman Michael van Gerwen has won a third Darts World Championship title following a 7-3 victory over England’s Michael Smith at Alexandra Palace.

The world number one raced into a 4-0 lead before Smith, seeded 10th won five successive legs to make it 4-2. Smith appearing in his first final made a nervous start and could not capitalise on Van Gerwen’s erratic plays at times, missing a double five in the eighth set.

Having won the title in 2014 and 2017, this triumph takes Van Gerwen to second in the list of PDC World Championship title wins, though he is way off Phil Taylor’s record 14 wins. Smith earned £200,000 prize money while Van Gerwen got a winner’s cheque of £500,000.
