Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta has instructed all cabinet members to take the COVID-19 vaccination. Kenyatta’s instructions were confirmed by his chief of staff who claims the President expects all to lead by example.
There have been some palpable concerns and vaccine apathy in many African nations and the AstraZeneca incident has only accentuated the fears among locals. The Kenyan president believes more citizens will be predisposed to taking the vaccines if lawmakers lead the way.
This comes amidst little to no bed spaces in hospitals and a high rate of infection amongst health workers. There are also concerns as some European countries as well as India are considering halting the export of vaccines due to rising cases.
Kenya is currently suffering a third wave of the virus and sustained high rates of infection within the past week. Over 126,000 cases and 2092 deaths have been confirmed.
