A Federal High Court in Lagos has banned the Ministry of Communication from blocking SIM Cards not linked to the National Identification Number (NIN) service on the previously stated deadline.
The court maintained that the time stipulated for all Nigerians to link their NIN with their respective mobile numbers was too short and could lead to a health crisis considering the pandemic.
As a result, the court ruled that the deadline be extended by an additional period of two months and also that plans to disconnect users from their registered mobile services be canned.
According to the petition filed by Bar. Monday Ubani, denying users access to their registered phone lines is an infringement on their fundamental human rights of expression in line with the Section 39(1)(2) and Section 44(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
