The European Union has joined the African Union and the United States to call for calm after a mass protest broke out over the firing of the Tunisian Prime Minister.

The Tunisian President, Kais Saied reportedly sacked Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi and suspended parliament for 30 days after a mass protest over the weekend.

Although the president quoted Article 80 of the constitution which bestows on him the power to do so, many see the move as a coup attempt.

A nationwide curfew ensued yesterday allowing no more than three persons to congregate.

As the EU Commission and the AU advised for peaceful deliberations and regard for the constitution, the US state department Spokesperson, Ned Price advised the Northern African nation to desist from any activities that will lead to violence.

The foreign minister, however, suggested that the actions of the president are temporary in a conversation with foreign counterparts.
