Burundi mourns 26 people killed in the North-western province of the country on Friday. Funerals have been held for the victims of the armed attack in Cibitoke. This comes just a few days before a constitutional referendum which allows the current President, Pierre Nkurunziza to stay in power until 2034.

The Russian Ambassador to the country, Petr Antipov on behalf of the diplomatic corps, in one vein expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims and the entire community.

There are reports that the attacks were carried out by some unidentified terrorist group that would have crossed over from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Interior Minister, Pascal Barandagiye, has assured the people that the attackers would be traced and prosecuted accordingly. He added that the culprits and their sponsors will face the law and be punished for committing such heinous acts.
