Burkina Faso begins Landmark Trial of Thomas Sankara's Murder trial begin

The mystery surrounding the death of Thomas Sankara is about to be unveiled as Burkina Faso has now begun an investigative trial into the murder of the revolutionary leader, 34 years ago.

The proceeding will see 14 men stand trial, including a former president, Blaise Compaore. Sankara died in a gruesome shooting episode which led to his death and 12 others. A motive that pushed Blaise Compaore into power.

There are rumours that Compaore has plans to boycott the trial, and has previously denied any involvement in the killings. The former president is expected to be tried in absentia by the military court in Ouagadougou.

He is facing charges of complicity in murder, harming state security and complicity in the concealment of corpses alongside his right-hand man, General Gilbert Diendere.
