A University in Tanzania an East African country has announced its decision to promote and enforce Gender Equality through the development agenda. Aga Khan University, Institute for Educational Development in East Africa (AKU-IED, EA) stated that through teaching and actions Gender Equality will be promoted and perpetuated.
Gender Equality is where everyone has access to equal rights or opportunities. That is where access to rights and opportunities is not marred or hindered by gender. A society where women and girls in society are as inclusive as men.
Professor Lugalla the Dean of the University stated that it is of high importance for a society to include women in societal affairs, to educate, employ and also empower them. He went further to broaden his point that biological differences shouldn’t be used to tear women off societal affairs and also development activities.
This was during a workshop that discusses the contribution of women to the development of society and the world. He further stated that while all these issues would be thought and addressed in the classroom, it doesn’t end there as it would also be allowed to flow into the community and society at large.
Aga Khan University also organized a week-long activity celebrating the International Women’s Day of March 8. The activities cut across health, fitness, and sessions where books are reviewed.
The Staff of the University visited hospitals and schools. They visited women who had obstetric fistula at CCBRT and also spoke to the girls at Tambaza High School.
Ms Mary Rusimbi a gender activist acknowledged the Tanzania government for making changes in the country’s law and policies that enable the inclusiveness of women in decision making and also politics.
