Scrutiny of data misuse by third-party applications is seriously underway by Facebook, and about 200 apps have already been suspended to this effect.
The suspension stems from Facebook’s investigation to find out if companies have misused data collected from the social network.
In a blog post on Monday, several thousands of apps have been thoroughly reviewed to find out which apps accessed large amounts of data as well as further painstakingly checking these apps for the ones that have misused the data and to what extent.
Ime Archibong, Facebook’s VP of product partnerships said, “Where we have concerns, we will conduct interviews, make requests for information (RFI) — which ask a series of detailed questions about the app and the data it has access to — and perform audits that may include on-site inspections.”
Archibong further stated that as the investigation continues, the number of default apps were expected to rise and on that account a lot more work needs to be done to find all the apps that may have misused people’s Facebook data which would take time.
Cambridge Analytica agreed that they mishandled tens of millions of data collected from users in March, hence the prompting of Facebook to investigate numerous apps on its platform.
